Geothermal features near volcanoes develop as groundwater percolates from the surface to depth coming in to contact with hot rocks and heating up as it moves, before returning to the surface, sometimes with minor magmatic fluid input. Geothermal systems are complex and they often change independently of the magmatic system below. Features include hot springs, geysers, mud pools, and fumaroles, which are all surface expressions of the geothermal system below. Hazards include hot or boiling water or mud, unstable ground or subsidence, and hydrothermal explosions. An increase in geothermal activity does not mean volcanic activity is increasing.
