Strong steaming

A six-member team of USGS volcanologists visited the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands 11-27 May 1992 at the request of the CNMI Office of Civil Defense. Vigorous steaming was occurring from several locations in the summit crater [of Asuncion] during observations from a helicopter on 18 May.

Information Contacts: R. Moore, USGS; R. Koyanagi, M. Sako, and F. Trusdell, HVO.

Episode 1 | Eruption Upper SE and W flanks
1906 - Unknown Evidence from Observations: Reported
An eruption in 1906 was described as beginning with an explosive phase and concluding with the efussion of several lava flows. Fresh-looking lava flows from vents on the upper SE and W flanks are considered to have probably originated from this eruption (Corwin, 1971).

[ 1901 ] Discredited Eruption

An eruption listed for 1901 in the CAVW refers to a description of steaming within crevices by Frite, and was not an eruptive event (Corwin, 1971).

[ 1819 ] Discredited Eruption

An eruption in 1819 listed in the CAVW corresponds to the date of French explorer Freycinet's visit to Sarigan, Guguan, and Alamagan. Freycinet did not visit Asuncion and makes only a general statement about activity continuing on Pagan and Asuncion, which does not constitute a valid report of an event as it appears to be based on books or sailing directions (Corwin, 1971).

[ 1786 ] Discredited Eruption

French explorer Lapérouse suggested a recent eruption prior to a 14 December 1786 visit on the basis of fresh ash on the upper parts of the cone and sulfurous odors to the lee of the island, but Corwin (1971) sets a tentative date of 1775 ± 10 CE for this eruption.

[ 1775 ± 10 years ] Uncertain Eruption

Episode 1 | Eruption
1775 ± 10 years - Unknown Evidence from Unknown
A tentative date of 1775 ± 10 CE was assigned by Corwin (1971) to an eruption postulated by the French explorer Lapérouse prior to his 1786 visit.

[ 1690 ± 10 years ] Uncertain Eruption

Episode 1 | Eruption
1690 ± 10 years - Unknown Evidence from Unknown
Either an eruption or intense fumarolic activity occurred near the end of the 17th century (Corwin, 1971).
