Eruptive History

There is data available for 3 confirmed Holocene eruptive periods.

1937 Nov 3 - 1937 Nov 4 Confirmed Eruption VEI: 3

Episode 1 | Eruption
1937 Nov 3 - 1937 Nov 4 Evidence from Observations: Reported
Coats (1950) reported a major explosive eruption on 3-4 November 1937. Hantke (1939a) noted press reports of a devastating eruption with ashfall and a lava flow. A violent eruption with "flames" originating near the center of the island was reported by a passing ship (Miller et al., 1998).

Deformation during 2004 - 2009 [Subsidence; Observed by InSAR]

Start Date: 2004 Stop Date: 2009 Direction: Subsidence Method: InSAR
Magnitude: Unknown Spatial Extent: Unknown Latitude: Unknown Longitude: Unknown

Remarks: Subsidence on the north flank due to contraction of 1937 lava flow.

Figure (see Caption)

Averaged deformation images of Yunaska Island produced by stacking all available InSAR images from 2004?2009 from the following tracks: a track 036 (ascending), b track 158 (descending), c track 265 (ascending), and d track 430 (descending). Dashed line delineates subsiding area on the north flank of Yunaska volcano extending from nearly the rim of Caldera II to the north shore. A full cycle of colors (i.e., one interferometric fringe) represents 28 mm/year of surface displacement along the LOS
