Volcanic craters are the top surface opening of conduits that form by explosive excavation or ejection of rock and the build up of material around the vent, with minor contributions from collapse. Craters display a wide range of shapes and sizes resulting from differing eruption styles. Volcanoes can have various active craters over time and multiple eruptions can form overlapping or nested craters. Hazards include ballistic ejecta, pyroclastic flows (also called pyroclastic density currents), ashfall, lahars, lava flows, volcanic lightning, volcanic gas, and structural failure.
